We generally measure the radioactivity of a certain element in terms of its half-life,, the amount of time it takes for half of a given sample to decay. The half life is the time it takes N nuclei to decay away to N/2 and, if you think about it, you can convince yourself that this is essentially a probability. If and when the a-particle is slowed down and captures a couple of electrons from somewhere, it becomes recognizable as ordinary helium. Also sometimes more elaborated algorithms can be applied in order to calculate the baseline of the pulses.
